Creating competitive advantage in modern economy is not an easy task. It should be based on the optimal use of assets possessed by the company, human resources in particular. The full use of staff potential requires systematic actions, implementation of personnel function at the strategic level. Companies professionally using the solutions in the area of human resource strategic management (HRSM) can achieve competitive advantage. The article outlines the major trends of research of HRSM and challenges faced by research workers in this area. A certain degree of explanation of relations between HRSM and competitiveness is offered by the concept of Human Resource Advantage, according to which companies are able to create the competitive advantage using solutions difficult to imitate by competitors within human resource management, in favour of effective implementation of strategy, learning by the organisation through growth stimulation, involvement and innovativeness of employees. The results of empirical analyses confirm the interdependence between the system of HRSM in the organisations and their effectiveness. It is necessary to continue research in this field. Nobody has worked out a sufficiently universal theoretical model to explain the mechanism of impact of application of human resource management practices on the results of enterprises. Moreover, it is indispensable to develop the methodology in such a way as to show causality in relations between the analysed phenomena as well as to control the impact of other variables affecting simultaneously the areas of human resource management and organisation effectiveness.
