Rozpad Związku Radzieckiego i kapitalistyczna transformacja europejskich gospodarek centralnie planowanych spowodowały przesunięcie zainteresowań ekonomii porównawczej (comparative economics) z porównywania dwu podstawowych systemów ekonomicznych na dostrzeganie wewnętrznego zróżnicowania kapitalizmu krajów wysoko rozwiniętych. Zróżnicowanie to dotyczy - najogólniej - zakresu i głębokości ingerencji państwa w stosunki własności i mechanizm rynkowy. Rozwijająca się w ostatnich latach teoria różnorodności kapitalizmu (varieties of capitalism) podejmuje próby klasyfikacji tych gospodarek.
Basic economic systems are not homogeneous. Both capitalism as well as the now historical centrally planned economy present great internal diversity. For several decades, this diversity was not analyzed to a great degree. Comparative economics was concentrated mainly on characteristic features of the two main systems. The dissolution of the USSR and the process of economic transition to capitalism in the previous Soviet bloc caused the change in interests. The differences among capitalist countries have been widely studied, a more formal approach to their comparison has been adopted, and the varieties of capitalism theory has been developed. Generally, contemporary developed capitalist countries (center) can be classified into several models on the basis of the scope and scale of society (state) intervention into capitalist property relations and into market mechanisms. Various studies expose that there arę several model groups from liberal capitalism with minimal state intervention on the one side to the social-democratic model of Scandinavian and some other European countries where capitalism is highly regulated. The United States and Sweden represent extremes of the developed capitalist countries and are examined more deeply. The causes of such extreme positions of these countries are also discussed.
