The article refers to the problem of credit risk analysis in the retail portfolio. This paper describes in detail the model adopted by the Basel Committee, which was proposed by Vasicek. In accordance with the recommendations of the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision, this is the basic methodology for estimating credit risk. The purpose of this article is to verify the assumptions made by the Basel Committee on asset correlation. The paper presents results of research conducted on the basis of a portfolio of car loans granted to individuals. Based on the results of research, reference was made to formulated by other scientists hypothesis that the Basel Committee adopted an excessively high level of correlation of assets for retail exposures. The results obtained on the basis of empirical data indicate a significantly lower correlation of assets in the population than is indicated in the formula contained in the New Basel Capital Accord. Hence it should be considered in the context of the results that adopted by the Basel Committee approach is essentially quite conservative, which in many cases can result in over-estimate the level of losses.
