W niniejszym artykule uwaga została skoncentrowana na zadowoleniu z życia matek i jego zależności od rodzaju wykonywanej pracy. Pomimo rozległych badań subiektywnego dobrostanu nasza wiedza na temat tego, co czyni matki szczęśliwymi, pozostaje ograniczona. Celem tej publikacji jest zaproponowanie częściowego wyjaśnienia poziomu zadowolenia specyficznego dla kobiet rodzących i wychowujących dzieci. (fragment tekstu)

In recent years we observe a process of gradual but intensive increase in number of scientific papers using the concepts of happiness, subjective well-being etc. The reasons for that are twofold; a practical one; data availability thanks to large survey studies (i.e World Value Survey -used in the research); and theoretical one, economists are simply tired of treating their major concept of "utility" as immeasurable and abstract. The paper, written by an economist, represents one of the examples of changes and deals with the issue of working mothers' (work is defined both as paid and unpaid) life satisfaction. It presents, in a comparative, international perspective; the level of working mothers' life satisfaction. To evaluate the effect motherhood has on mothers' subjective well-being, they are compared with childless women/men and fathers. The results suggest that 'double shift" - employment and childcare appears to be connected with a drop in mothers' life satisfaction; motherhood decreases the average mothers' life satisfaction mostly in relatively poorer countries; an interesting observation is that housewives represent one of the most satisfied group of mothers and unemployed mothers seem to be the least satisfied.
