The paper examines the scope of communication between customers (i.e. C2C communication) as an element of communication strategy. The main aim is to highlight and explore conceptually the wide array of communications occurring between customers. The meaning of word-of-mouth is examined, and its relevance, especially in services marketing, assessed. The paper, however, introduces aspects of C2C communication beyond the WOM perspective. The changing meaning of C2C communication in the context of rapidly growing internet usage is explored. C2C communication is discussed both from a promotional and an operational point of view. The paper outlines a number of forms of C2C communication which firms cannot easily control but need to monitor and react to. The paper also outlines a number of ways in which firms have tried to harness the power of C2C. A wide range of illustrations of C2C communication are provided. (original abstract)
