The European Union (EU) is one of the major players in the sector of renewable energy worldwide for political, economic and technological reasons. Having integrated the strive for sustainable development within its political goals and strategies, Europe recognizes the necessity to rise the share of energy that is produced from clean, renewable energy sources (RESs). The aim of this paper is to present the main technological and economic challenges that European countries will have to face in the near future to make RESs, and particularly wind power, more viable and more competitive when compared to conventional energy sources in order to reach the environmental goals that European institutions have set. The ability to manage these challenges correctly will be essential to contribute to the expansion or contraction of the market in the future and enable or jeopardize the achievement of the goals that European institutions have set. Z powodów politycznych, ekonomicznych i technologicznych Unia Europejska dominuje na świecie w sektorze odnawialnych źródeł energii. W celu osiągnięcia zrównoważonego rozwoju w Europie istnieje konieczność zwiększenia udziału energii wytwarzanej z odnawialnych źródeł. Celem niniejszej pracy jest przedstawienie technologicznych i ekonomicznych wyzwań jakie w bliskiej przyszłości czekają kraje europejskie zwiększające udział odnawialnych źródeł energii.
