The custom of substituting a short metaphor in the place of a complex situation has long been an accepted practice in the analysis of international relations. Popular thought of the 19th century was reflected in a series of metaphors and many authors of that period, with Karl Marx as the most conspicuous example, competed with one another in their creation. Metaphorical thinking provides man with an easily adopted key to understanding phenomena and events. It is an example of stereotypical thinking that allows for the anticipation of the course of future events. (fragment of original text)
