This contemporary global financial and economic crisis has triggered, among others, the following interesting questions - to what extent has the public relations industry contributed to, and may be held partly responsible for, the financial scandals contributing to the recent collapse? Apart from specific practitioner actions, this question has an even more neglected global dimension concerning the role of public relations in promoting the economic theories and the neo-liberal ideology that encouraged deregulation, discouraged oversight, and created an environment conducive to greed-focused managerial practices causing indirectly the 2008-2009 global financial and economic collapse. This study tries to clarify the above asked questions by underlining among others the economic context of public relations. (original abstract)
