Pattern of the Expected Utility Model and the Development of Decision Theory

(fragment tekstu)
Two main approaches dominate in the theory of risky choices. The welI known standard models are consistent with the paradigm of the expected utility theory. AlI theories based on the formal axioms as rules of rational behavior and the utility preference function which is designed to permit observed violations of the independence axiom are called conventional theories. The models of risky choices which can not be reduced to, or expressed purely on terms of a single preference function are called nonconventional. Such theories based on the observed behavior of individuals engaged in risky choices. The nonconventional approach corresponds with the mental activities actually involved in making choices. This paper reviews the main approaches that have been adopted to analyze and describe decisions rules in the context of expected utility theory methodology. (original abstract)
