Abstrakty
The article contains the examination of the actual propensity of allocation of Private Equity investments (and their subcategory - Venture Capital investments) into companies defined as "high tech". Data for 1990-2010 period were examined for the U.S., Europe and Poland. The analysis showed that the proportion of money allocated to financing high tech companies is really high for Venture Capital investments (especially when wide meaning of high tech term is applied), but for the entire category of Private Equity in recent years investments are dominated by traditional industries, and therefore linking Private Equity with investments in high tech should be nowadays considered as not justified. There was an enormous growth of interest in high tech companies during the Internet Boom (year 2000), but since then the propensity of Venture Capital investments and total Private Equity investments in high tech companies in U.S. and in Europe decreased considerably and in the last 5-year period it stays relatively constant (the exception is an increase of European VC investments in high tech defined narrowly). In Poland VC and PE investments in high tech companies are less popular, than in U.S. and Europe, and the propensity to invest in them in the last decade should be considered rather as decreasing.
