Although in the 2012 U.S. elections, two fundamentally different visions of America are clashing, and the ideological differences between the two platforms are probably the widest since the Goldwater campaign in 1964, its true significant is still hard to predict. The presidential campaign is being conducted under a cloud of serious challenges that the U.S. faces today: a political crises, rising mountain of federal debt, expanding healthcare costs, underinvestment in transport infrastructure, mediocre primary education, growing economic inequalities, concerns about U.S. international competitiveness, a rising and increasingly assertive China, and the looming risk of falling off a "fiscal cliff' into another recession. This election will help to address them only if they enable Americans to overcome the current political deadlock in Washington. (original abstract)
