The concept of social capital is one of the most important concepts which appeared in social sciences in the 1990's of the previous century. It is of interdisciplinary character and very far from achieving a homogenous form. Among different approaches it is possible to differentiate the following: individualistic perspective, network perspective, a perspective of identifying social capital with confidence in general, treating social capital as a sum of social factors which influence the economy. Considerations on "social capital" are frequently combined with " cultural capital" and "knowledge capital" treating them jointly as "social resources". The concept of social capital is significant for the social dimension of sustainable development. Of particular importance are such aspects of development processes as : ensuring conditions for existence of the members of a given society, ability to develop partial social systems and the corresponding social structures, maintenance and further development of social resources, equal opportunities of access to the resources, participation in the social decision-making processes concerning directions of development and the ways of their realization. The paper concludes that the concept of social capital is only partially useful for the analyses of the social dimension of sustainable development. (original abstract)
