Emigration is an old and common social phenomenon. It may be observed in almost every properly developing country. If, however, because of emigration a country loses a vast majority of young, dynamic and best-educated working power or if the scale of such phenomenon becomes disturbingly large, one may and should talk about a serious social and economic problem. This article attempts at researching emigration tendencies of Lodz's academic youth and discovering its fundamental determinants. The results of the survey indicate that every tenth student of Lodz's state colleges declares an emigration tendency. The willingness of searching for a job abroad is first of all a characteristic feature of students who come from a large city (mostly Lodz) and who know English well enough to frequently watch films and/or read articles in this language. It may be surprising, however, that statistic analysis excluded the influence of student's sex on their view on emigration. A disturbingly high propensity to emigrate has been observed among medicine PhD students, which amounted to exactly 20%. A chi-square test and correlation analysis were first used for the statistic analysis of the survey. In order to research the discussed phenomenon more thoroughly, analysis using logistic regression was employed. The research on propensity to emigrate indicates that Lodz's students are not much willing to emigrate. However, the fact that the more prestigious the students' studies are, the greater the propensity to emigrate is. However, alarming is the fact that the more prestigious the students' studies are, the greater the propensity to emigrate is. This tendency is also a result of the critical assessment of home labour market. (original abstract)
