Przedmiot rozważań zawartych w artykule można określić jako refleksję nad możliwością i sensem poszukiwania unifikacji zagadnień z kręgu tzw. arbitrażu - w obszarze ekonomii, finansów, matematyki i wyboru społecznego. Zdaniem autora, nawet taki pobieżny "ogląd zagadnień arbitrażowych" powinien skłaniać do ostrożności w formułowaniu abstrakcyjnych skrótów myślowych, sprowadzających tę problematykę do klasycznego twierdzenia o alternatywie czy zasady dualności. The subject discussed in the article may be seen as a reflection on the possibility and sense of attempting at unification of the variety of problems connected with the so-called arbitrage phenomena in economics, finance, mathematics and the social choice theory. The variants of formal approaches to the problems concerning the arbitrage opportunities, eliminating them and arbitrage pricing models, are mentioned (also - in the historical perspective). The author notices some "methodological trap": when making attempts to achieve a high level of abstraction (enabling the general view on the field and revealing significant common features of particular cases) - one should not neglect (the equally significant) distinctive features of important classes of sub models, which additionally enriches the comprehension of ideas. In a synthetic form, subsequent "classical" examples are recalled (Couraot, Walras, de Finetti, Keynes) as well as the important article of Modigliani and Miller. Next, three main "paths of development" of modern research in the "arbitrage area" are sketched (the arbitrage pricing model - APT - of Ross, "martingales discoveries" - conception of Harrison, Kreps and Pliska and "equilibrium-type" approach of Kreps, Werner, Page and Milne). At the and of the paper, the mention is made of large financial markets (the notion introduced by Kabanov and Kramkov) and limited arbitrage (the conception of Chi-chilnisky) - complemented by the remark on the role, the "arbitrage - no arbitrage mechanics", plays in the general theory of value. In the author's opinion, even the surface look at the topic could suggest carefulness in the use of abstract abbreviations, simplifying the subject to the classical theorem on alternative, the duality principle or the theory of separating convex sets.
