The aim of this study is to identify the impact of foreign capital on the economic effectiveness of the Polish manufacturing industry. The latter is conditioned among others by the country's innovative potential, which makes it possible not only to achieve a high economic growth rate but, first of all, makes it possible to maintain it in the long run according to the concept of the knowledge-based economy. It has been assumed that the indicator of labour productivity is a synthetic measure of economic effectiveness determined by market processes in the area of technology and human capital accumulation. The scope of the study has included Polish business lines classified as consumer goods sector (K) - providing mainly consumer goods, manufacturing sector (P) - comprising production areas satisfying first of all indirect demand, and technologically advanced sector (W) - including areas where technological advances are made. In the study the annual data for the years 1997-2004 were used, published by Central Statistical Office. The conducted econometric analyses have indicated that the presence of foreign investors directly and indirectly stimulated the processes increasing labour effectiveness in the technological sector. A different regularity occurred in sector K where only indirect effects were observed. In the case of sector P, an increase in the involvement of foreign capital in indirect goods production led to decreased productivity, which is indicated by the results obtained in the multiple regression analysis (direct effect) as well as in the analysis of elasticity coefficients (indirect effect). At the same time the relation between the role of foreign capital in the base capital and productivity observed in the analyzed sectors, suggests a non-linear dependence between these categories. The graphic illustration of this is a convex parabola, and the impact of foreign capital on competitiveness changes from minus to plus after a certain level of foreign capital saturation is exceeded. The concept suggested by the authors is partly of deductive nature, therefore, a full verification of the concept requires more detailed analyses. (original abstract)
