The article offers analysis of the development in Latin America and the Caribbean Area from 1990-2006 regarding the evolution of the flows of foreign direct investment (FDI). It uses the data gathered by the United Nation Conference in Trade and Development (UNCTAD) to analyze such evolution. FDI contributes to a structural process of change that alleviates the growth in income and the transformation of the national demand. With regards to this matter, Venezuela, Bolivia and Argentina have lost participation of FDI because of the establishment of protectionist economies which might cause lower medium-term development indexes due to a lag in capital and technological transfer.(original abstract)
