Statistical Analysis of Extreme Events in Capital Markets

Przeprowadzone badania dotyczą modelowania ogonów rozkładów prawdopodobieństwa dla kilku indeksów GPW w Warszawie i kilkunastu indeksów największych światowych giełd.(fragment tekstu)
In this paper we analyse the tail distribution behavior for a range of international equity indices. We use a block maxima model to estimate parameters of generalized extreme value distribution and extreme return levels. Most considered distributions are in the Frechet domain of attraction but the majority of WIG subindices distributions are in the Gumbel domain of attraction. We find a rather weak evidence of tail asymmetry, but fatter tails, what is surprising, are on the right hand side of distributions. This could suggest there is a greater probability of booms than crashes. Extreme return levels are mostly higher for the left tails. The highest extreme return levels are observed in the China Capital Markets.(original abstract)
