Nowadays, it's noticed the development of the alternative investments like hedge funds, funds of fund's, private equities, commodity trading advisors and real estates. This paper aims at approaching knowledge of hedge fund now means any type of private investment partnership. The primary aim of the most hedge funds is to reduce volatility and risk attempting to preserve capital and deliver positive returns under all market conditions by using any types of investment strategies. The author presents the classification of hedge funds by Philippe Cottier. Moreover, he describes the first polish hedge fund Superfund, which is organized as an umbrella fund of funds. This fund offers three subfunds - Superfund A, Superfund В and Superfund C, differ each other by risk, strategy and investment aim. (original abstract)
