The transformation of centrally planned economies into free market systems resulted in many economic and social outcomes. One of the most vivid results of those changes in almost all transition countries was the massive rise in their international involvement. At the same time, the inner structure of transition economies changed a lot. Private small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) grew very fast and as a whole became an important part of those economies. This paper aims to outline a few facts on the international involvement of Polish SMEs in the late stage of transition (the empirical investigation was carried out in 2004). After a short macroeconomic overview, the behaviour of Polish exporting SMEs is presented in a few of the most interesting contexts. The findings are based on the results of research conducted on a sample of more than 100 manufacturing SMEs from the Małopolska region in southern Poland. (fragment of text)
