The decision making process in the business environment involves several managerial levels. However, no matter the decision making domain or level, the process is becoming more and more complex. This issue has a couple of contributing factors at its core. Information excess is just one of them. Contemporary business environment provides the decision maker with a lot of crucial information but also overwhelming amounts of redundant or unnecessary data. One of the reasons for this situation is the ever-growing number of corporate information systems, supporting various aspects of companies' operations. Alongside those, there are a lot of exterior information sources available i.e. the Internet. This problem has been named as information overload and is only one of many issues affecting the decision making process. Awareness of these difficulties has made the need for computerized support in the domain of decision making a commonly accepted notion. The means to incorporate this notion are Decision Support Systems as well as Business Intelligence. The aim of this article is to closely examine the concepts of Decision Support Systems and Business Intelligence, to analyze the differences and common features and to provide a systematic approach to both of those terms. The motivation for this paper was the lack of clear definitions and widely accepted approach to differing between the two ideas. (original abstract)
