Kanada, Meksyk i Stany Zjednoczone Ameryki Północnej osiągnęły w grudniu 1992 r. porozumienie w sprawie utworzenia Północnoamerykańskiej Strefy Wolnego Handlu (North American Free Trade Agreement - NAFTA). W artykule przedstawiono podstawowe wskaźniki potencjału gospodarczego tych krajów w roku 1991, drogę do utworzenia strefy wolnego handlu w Ameryce Północnej, główne założenia porozumienia NAFTA, a także szacowany przez specjalistów potencjalny wpływ NAFTA na gospodarkę i jej poszczególne sektory w krajach członkowskich.
The author discusses the economic links between the NAFTA - member countries, pointing to differences in their economic potentials and structures. She considers the path they arrived at the agreement on free trade, their motivations as well as their new approach to the question of regional cooperation. The author examines the assumptions underlying the gradual liberalization of trade, extended over fifteen years, especially in sensitive industries, the liberalization of trade in services and direct investments, and the arrangements relative to the protection of intellectual property, environment and labour safety. The author presents estimates of the potential influence of NAFTA on the economy and selected sectors of the member countries and the costs involved in adjustment processes. NAFTA is seen as the origin of a new approach to the economic integration on the American continent and to the role of the United States in that region. (original abstract)
