The aim of the paper is to demonstrate the possibilities of research in project management offered by institutional theories. It is underlined that the development and enhancement of contemporary project management results not only from the rational processes oriented towards higher effectiveness, but also from the irrational processes influencing the companies due to the institutional context. In the first part of the article the institutional theories which offer the basis for interesting research on project management will be presented, and the results of research on knowledge transfer models, professionalization of project managers, as well as the dispersion of the methodologies and certificates will be discussed. In the last part of the article the suggestions as to the possibilities of future research, concerning the Polish context within, will be demonstrated. (original abstract)
