The purpose of this research is to provide a synthetic overview of the evolution of strategic thinking, to clarify some of the salient issues and contradictions surrounding this way of thinking and to indicate its possible development paths. The research is dedicated to find answers to the following questions: what is the nature of strategic thinking? How do we recognize it? How is it different from alternative approaches to thinking in an organization? In the first part of the paper, a variety of schools of thought on strategic thinking has been compared. Then, the interrelations between strategic thinking and strategic planning have been discussed as well as two perspectives of strategic thinking: individual and organizational. Finally, the concept of design thinking has been developed as a new way of understanding of strategic thinking. (original abstract)
