W 1997 r. w 17 krajach europejskich funkcjonowały specjalne towarzystwa zajmujące się wyłącznie organizacją multimodalnych przewozów szynowo- -drogowych. Były to: Adria Kombi ze Słowenii, Bohemia Kombi z Czech, Cemat z Włoch, Combiberia z Hiszpanii, CTL (Combined Transport Ltd.) z Wielkiej Brytanii, Hungarokombi z Węgier, Hupac ze Szwajcarii, Kombi-Dan z Danii, Kombi-Nor z Norwegii, Kombiverkehr z Niemiec, Novatrans z Francji, Ókombi z Austrii, Polkombi z Polski, Portif z Portugalii, Swe-Kombi ze Szwecji, Trailstar z Holandii i TRW (Transport Route-Wagon) z Belgii. W 1991 r. trzy przedsiębiorstwa skandynawskie powołały do życia stowarzyszenie Scankombi. Wszystkie towarzystwa przyjęły formę spółek akcyjnych. Ich udziałowcami są głównie przewoźnicy samochodowi, przedsiębiorstwa kolejowe oraz spedytorzy - łącznie około 1000 przedsiębiorstw. Powstały one przede wszystkim po to, aby się zająć sprzedażą i organizacją usług w zakresie transportu szynowo-drogowego. (fragment tekstu)
The organization of overland intermodal transportation in Europe is the domain of forwarders, railroad oparators and specially set-up companies, whose owners are the railroad companies, truck carriers and forwarders. These specialized companies exploit and utilize the railroad s technical means in the form of railroad cars and intermodal terminals. They are primarily concerned in the sale of services as offered by railroad companies as well as the organization of shipping consignments commissioned them. Together with railroad management, they organize regularly scheduled connections using TECE trains, provide special, unscheduled trains for individual clients (especially shipping agents) based on bilaterally agreed prices and conditions, and organize the transportation of rail-road unit groups using regular freight trains. On the international scene, we are dealing with the UIRR and ICF associations. The members of these organizations organize the shipment of semi trailers, containers, swap bodies and trucks. Growing role in the field of the intermodal management plays railroad operators. In the recent years the development of rail-road shipments using Channel Tunnel became very important link on the European intermodal transportation map. (original abstract)
