The article written ten years after the death of Edward Lipiński is intended to outline thre socio-economic thought of that eminent Polish thinker. During the World War I and in the early years of Poland's independence, Lipiński was organizing the Labour Inspectorate and propagating the ideas of labour legislation. In the second half of the twenties he engaged in founding the Research Institute on Bussines Cycles and Prices which he then headed until 1939. At that time, he also taught neoclassical economics at the High School of Commerce. After World War II, the area of Lipihski's studies and writings expanded considerably. Initially, he tried to rationalize the practice and theory of economic planning basing on neoclassical economics. In the first half of the fifities when Lipiński was forbidden to teach he turned to study the history of Polish economic thought, beginning with Nicolas Copernicus. Since 1956 Lipiński was becoming more and more critical of the theory of planning optimisation and neoclassical economics as well. He considered it as having lost touch with real life. He wondered why the system of "real socialism" had adopted the bourgeois system of values. Problems of social conditions of production became main concern of his writings. This led him to a unique re-interpretation of Marx's theory as a bourgeois civilization and his vision of socialism (communism) as an alternative civilization based on creativity of labour, free creation and self-fulfilment of man. He also contemplated on limits of the possible "needs creation" of individuals and social preferences. (original abstract)
