Nobel dla Unii Europejskiej? Jak najbardziej

Jeśli nie pamiętamy większości nazwisk osób czy nazw organizacji laureatów Pokojowej Nagrody Nobla, to nie ze względu na upływ czasu, ale dlatego, że ich osiągnięcia okazywały się nietrwałe albo ich związek z pokojem był wątpliwy. Coś mogło się wydawać w danym momencie ważne, lecz bieg historii tego nie potwierdził. Zdarzały się też decyzje kontrowersyjne już w momencie ich ogłoszenia. Ja także mógłbym przytoczyć długą listę nagród nietrafnych, niekiedy zdezawuowanych przez samych laureatów ich dalszą działalnością. Taktownie przemilczę. Muszę jednak powiedzieć, że kontrowersje i uwagi krytyczne wobec decyzji z 2012 r. o przyznaniu tej nagrody Unii Europejskiej zupełnie mnie zaskoczyły. Miały one różne podłoże: narcyzm niektórych laureatów z przeszłości, niechęć do UE czy Europy lub też zwyczajna niewiedza dotycząca aktywności Unii czy też reguł przyznawania tej nagrody. No-one will ever attempt to detract from the organisations cited by Anion Bebler. The strength, the uniqueness and the beauty of the European Union lie precisely in that it combines the advantages of all those bodies, being simultaneously like a NATO, a mini-UN, a Council of Europe and many others. And this is why Europe is now the most humane place under the sun - in terms of peace, security, development level, social solidarity, and respect for human rights and liberties. This is why the EU is seen as an example in other regions of the world, attempting to emulate it with varying degrees of success. And this is why-the crisis notwithstanding-the EU is still in demand, with no shortage of candidates willing to join. Just suffice it to imagine a Europe without the EU-whether 25 years ago or today. Or, perhaps, better not think about it. But if A. Bebler did just that, I trust that he would look at the Oslo decision as less controversial, and perhaps even might accept it. The post-communist societies are best positioned to appreciate that choice, and they do not need any fine scales to weigh up the pros and cons. To me, the decision is long overdue, especially remembering the award's many other laureates. In fact, there should be two Nobel Peace Prizes for the European Communities/European Union. One (which should have been awarded long ago) for peace within its borders; and the other for working towards peace around the world. (original abstract)
