Attracting, developing and retaining key talent is one of the most challenging aspects for employers today. Shortages in skills across a number of industries, shrinking labour pool, ageing workforce, and increasing mobility between professions mean that there is growing competition between firms for talented and engaged employees. The drive towards engaged workforce needs to be built on good people management and development policies and the active support of line managers. People management strategies and policies need to be aligned with those of the wider business. Employees need to understand how their work contributes to organisational profits. Although, generally, a minority of employees is engaged; organisations may need to turn particular attention to recruitment and selection processes, performance management process and proper internal communication. Building and maintaining employee engagement is a process that requires time, effort and resources, but the benefits should be observed in better cooperation between employees, higher than average customer loyalty, above average productivity and earnings and lower level of employee turnover. It is better to survey less and act more and never rely purely on employee engagement survey to drive the strategy. (original abstract)
