W artykule przedstawiono zmieniającą się rolę przemysłu na różnych etapach urbanizacji w nowoczesnych aglomeracjach miejskich, które zostały omówione oddzielnie dla krajów kapitalistycznych i socjalistycznych.

The changing role of industry at various stages of urbanization of modern urban agglomerations, which are usually industrial-urban agglomerations, has been presented. Against the background of that changing role of industry, the purposes of development and trends in structural changes of industry in urban agglomerations have been discussed, separately for capitalist countries and socialist ones. The purposes and directions of development and industrial restructuring, coinnon for the both types of urban agglomerations are: development of modern branches of industry and production ensuring increase in effectiveness and export, limitation of oppressiveness of industry to the environment, development of small works which are more elastic regarding the production pattern and innovational ability. The main differences in the purposes of development and structural changes of industry in agglomerations of socialist countries compared with the agglomerations in capitalist countries consist, at present, in the pattern of employment. That difference results basically from unemployment in agglomerations of many capitalist countries caused by limitation of production in certain branches of industry and, on the other hand, from persisting, distinct stabilization and even deficiency of labour in socialist countries, accompanied by unfavourable inertia of the industrial production structure. Thus, in conclusion, the instruments havs been pointed out which are used in socialist countries for economic reforms, aiming at accelerating the increase in productivity and limiting deficiency of labour, as well as at eliminating the causes which impede desirable structural changes of industry in urban agglomerations of those countries.
