The following paper postulates that current management and organization theory puts too much attention on the analysis of Gaussian distributions, while overlooking existence of power law distributions. Power law distributions are crucial for our understanding of business environment, as we can learn much more from radical and critical cases than from studying the averages. We show how power laws are useful for management and organization analysis, by presenting examples of their occurrence in both academic and popular publications. We also make a point that especially for the studies of digital societies and cultures analyzing power law distributions may bring interesting and novel results. This is so because Internet communities are characterized by very high complexity, a large number of participants and interactions, and because all of these interactions are registered, archived, and often easily researchable and open for aggregation. Our paper is a call for more studies of digital societies in search of power laws, and we invite especially prospective and emerging scholars to join our this search. (original abstract)
