The present article stands on the basic presumption that national integration and the subsequent shift towards European integration can only be achieved through electoral support: voters perceive the consensus among policy-makers and their effectiveness on an everyday basis, and provide crucial input to the legitimacy of policies at national elections and respective EU referendums. Positive votes cast at such polls supposedly show that people are satisfied with the elite's performance, particularly in the economic field, perceive the consequences of specific measures as relatively beneficial, and tend to support the leading actors and their policies, whatever those policies may be. Voters not only legitimise decisions at that particular moment but also set limits for future policy choices. (fragment of text)
