The present paper is based on an analysis of FDI trends in Slovenia and existing research on the subject, as well as on an analysis of the performance of foreign investment enterprises (FIEs, enterprises with a 10% foreign equity share or higher). It also makes comparisons with domestic enterprises (DEs, enterprises with a foreign equity share below 10%). The paper is structured as follows: Section I analyses FDI level and trends in Slovenia, together with the reasons for these trends; section II looks at the countries of origin of foreign investors and the sectoral distribution of FDI; section III discusses the motives for investment and the strategic pattern of FDI in Slovenia, looking in particular at the extent to which FDI in Slovenia is a case of seeking factor cost advantage; section IV deals with wages as a determinant of FDI in Slovenia; sections V, VI, VII and VIII deal with the importance and dynamics of FDI and its impact on restructuring and productivity in Slovenia, while sections IX and X deal with the legal and policy framework for FDI in Slovenia.
