Since 1989, after abolishing communist planning, Eastern Europe is establishing a capitalist pattern of ownership where the majority of industrial and banking assets is not only predominantly private but where most privately-held assets are under foreign control. This paper provides quantitative evidence that the emerging property patterns in Hungary and Poland make them the two most advanced post-communist countries in selling assets to foreigners, with Austria, a well-established capitalist economy, chosen as a point of reference.
