Abstrakty

Celem artykułu jest zaprezentowanie koncepcji kształtowania systemu transportowego współczesnych metropolii. W pierwszej kolejności tych, które od połowy XIX w. do chwili obecnej kształtowały strukturę i funkcjonowanie miast i ich strefy podmiejskiej - wraz ze skutkami, jakie to przyniosło. Natomiast w drugiej kolejności tych, które już teraz zaczynają zmieniać współczesne metropolie i jednocześnie stanowią przyszłość transportu na ich terenie. Wprowadzenie do tych najważniejszych części artykułu stanowi krótki opis uwarunkowań globalnych, przede wszystkim o charakterze demograficznym.(fragment tekstu)

In the mid-19th century the future of the Paris transport system was extremely pessimistic in forecasts of the then futurologists. A number of serious problems was predicted. Firstly, the growing number of carriage horses was supposed to lead to the situation, in which they could not be located in stables. Secondly, the rising number of carriages was supposed to lead to total blocking of the city. Thirdly, as a result of a huge number of horses, Paris streets would be covered with an inconceivable layer of their excrement. Fortunately, this did not happen. History shows that constructing the car turned out to be the rescue. But in this respect, with quite unlikely prospects of putting more high-speed means of transport into use, can the currently rising number of cars in cities perhaps lead to the almost permanent transportation paralysis? In such a situation, is building on new streets, lanes, and grade-separated intersections an only possibility of increasing the speed of moving? It seems not. As a matter of fact, similar anxieties were quite frequent in Western Europe of the 1960s and 70s, yet they have disappeared. Simultaneously, it turned out that for various reasons the expansion of roads, car parks, etc. does not serve the functioning of the city, including the fact that it does not stream.in. its transport system as well as it was expected. Obviously, automatic limiting of the number of moving cars is so to speak inscribed into congestion. Thus jam.in. the city cannot incessantly increase. If car users are not be able to effectively get to their destinations, even if they attempt to use alternative roads, they will resign from such a form of travel. There is only one condition - they must have an option of another means transport, whether the tram or the fast city train, but also going on foot or by bicycle. Hence it is necessary to create balanced transport, whose significant feature would be a possibly high functionality of individual, mutually integrated means of public transportation. As a matter of fact, such integration should go beyond public transport and enable changing from the car in "Park&Ride" systems or from the bicycle in "Bike&Ride" systems.(original abstract)
