The folk revolt, which broke out in Tunisia in December 2011, subsequently engulfed also all Arab countries of North Africa and the Middle East by the domino effect. The Arab revolt is first of all a protest against social inequalities, poverty, high prices, unemployment, bureaucracy, corruption, nepotism, lack of economic and political liberties, violation of human rights. Before the revolt broke out, it had been convenient for superpowers to cooperate with authoritarian regimes, which guaranteed stability in the region, secured against fundamentalists, ensured favourable investing conditions. In Tunisia and Egypt the presidents were deposed but the basic structures of both the regimes have remained intact to a significant extent. Libya and Syria, in turn, are countries where the dictators decided to stay in power at all costs, by force. The crucial role in bringing the regime to the collapse in Libya was played by the NATO intervention. In Syria the president El. Assad has been still imposing repressive measures against the opposition despite being condemned by the "international community". In its current conditionality policy the EU demands that the Arab countries periodically hold free elections, and respect freedom of association, freedom of speech and press, court independence, reforms of police and army, as well as combat corruption. The issue of recognising Palestine as a state is a significant problem in the EU relations with Arab countries. The Polish presidency in the EU makes efforts to ensure that the "Arab Spring" takes advantage of the experience of the "Autumn of Nations" which took place in Central Europe over 20 years ago. It is rather unlikely that Arab countries become fully democratic within the next several years, although the direction of the changes seems to be irreversible. However, it cannot be excluded that Islamic parties will win the democratic elections in Tunisia and Egypt and subsequently in other Arab countries, which may mean the increase of the threat of violence and terrorism in the region where Al-Qaida remains active. The political changes in Arab countries will have major geopolitical consequences, the scope and significance of which are difficult to foresee for these countries and for the EU and NATO interests.
