Modern development processes can be grouped into three interdependent categories. Theses are mostly the processes related to the development of science, engineering and technology, which create both new opportunities and new threats. Such new opportunities are, however, not always used in a rational way and new potential threats are more and more often becoming veal threats. Development processes in science, engineering and technology stimulate economy; this, in turn, leads to another economic category of changes often perceived as economic growth. Such growth, however, is restricted by identifiable limitations. Dynamic economic growth due to, inter alia, development of science and engineering, on the one hand, and limitations to said growth of physical and institutional character, on the other hand, would determine the nature of such changes. That would lead to another category of development phenomena and processes, namely cultural phenomena and processes. The aforementioned development trends have appeared within the boundaries of certain traditional ways of thinking, acting and social order. Limitations and restrictions of traditionally perceived economic growth often result in the creation of new cultural patterns. Hence, the so-called "turning point" of the Western civilisation, which has been evident for some time now. However, the manner of perception of such turning point has also been changing over time.
