The goal of this article is to present the most important criteria used by business angels in their assessment of investment projects. Factors that may infl uence implementation of those criteria are also explained. Critical analysis of the international literature is carried out in order to find common findings and the most important divergences. The focus is placed not only on the criteria but also on the factors that have impact on observed differences of results obtained by researchers. The analysis leads to the conclusion that despite huge methodological obstacles experienced by such studies, an emerging paradigm claims that the most important criteria employed by angels are characteristics of the entrepreneurs preparing the projects and less so product, market and surprisingly technical issues including financial aspects. The analysis offers foundation for research to be carried out in Poland. (original abstract)
