The paper covers the legal framework establishing the harmonised European river information system in order to ensure the compatibility and interoperability of the existing and new systems of this type on Community waterways. It describes the framework of the river information system which ought to enable the system operators and users to achieve their objectives by means of carrying out a number of tasks related to inland fleet management, based on acquired and shared information, using specialised technical systems which deliver the respective service. It also presents the scope of Polish inland waterways which are covered by the legal requirement to implement a harmonised river information system.(original abstract)
