Today the Polish and German border regions are developing in a certain tense field between proximity and distance. German and Polish SME meet each other both as a potential cooperation partner and as competitor. It's time to seek more suitable firm strategies to enlarge cross-border activities between Polish and German companies. However the preconditions to expand cross-border cooperation are not very good because the economic preconditions in the border regions don't enough promote a mutual advantagering firm cooperation. The reason for this is that the comparative advantages don't complement another very well. Practical experience has shown that in any case the building of confidence is one of the most important resources for a successful cross-border cooperation. In this context it is recommended to build up more cross-border networks between German and Polish SME in order to achieve a higher regional competitiveness in selected sectors. The paper will demonstrate that despite Poland's full membership in the EU many Polish and German SME have so far been limiting their economic activities, supplier relations, opportunities of specialization within their own national economy or own border region.
