Abstrakty
The ambition of the mainstream economy in all its forms was the creation of a theory possessing the value of universalism. This forced far-reaching simplifications in subsequent theoretical systems, above all in terms of a broadly perceived institutional environment. Simultaneously, in this way a possibility opened to build logically coherent theoretical systems in advanced isolation from the historical analysis of the explained phenomena and processes. Institutional economists consider explanation of economic processes without their institutional context a fallacy, and therefore unacceptable. This lends a high rank to the historical analysis, because the system of institutions is always unique in time and space. A business cycle is an example of a group of phenomena serving exceptionally well to illustrate the consequences of the different roles attributed to the historical analysis for its explanations. This group of phenomena has a long history, and numerous attempts had been made to interpret it theoretically until a de facto state of helplessness by the contemporary mainstream economics (both in its classical and Keynesian versions) was announced in this regard. Within the framework of the institutional economy, after a period of a large-scale research cycle, mainly associated with the name of the American institutionalist, W.C. Mitchell, there are now no signs of interest in their continuation. However, under the influence of an initial research effort, the practice of economic research carried out by the National Bureau of Economic Research in New York has remained to this day. The article presents theoretical and methodological suggestions aimed at overcoming the current impasse in explaining the mechanism of the business cycle. On the one hand an attempt was made to formulate a universal definition of the cycle and, on the other, a historical analysis was used for its identification after World War II in the two major economies.
