The aim of this paper is to identify the transmission mechanisms of fuel price changes into inflation processes in the Polish economy and to quantify the magnitude of this impact on the example of diesel oil, which is a strategically important type of fuel for industry and transport. The verification of the assumed influence involved searching for long-run relationships between the retail price of the refinery product, the consumer price index and the exchange rate within a multivariate cointegration framework, with the application of cointegrated VAR models. As demonstrated, the isolated impact of diesel oil final price on domestic prices at the consumer level, which results from the first-round effects, is significantly higher than the direct share of the whole group of fuels in the consumption basket on the basis of which the consumer price index is constructed. This implies that the significant part of transmission takes place via an intermediate channel of producer prices and is due to the important role of fuels as production cost components.(original abstract)
