Creative industries, creative work, and creative workers have become of greater research interest in both the theory and practice of management. However, the majority of scientific publications devoted to the creative workers - being the core of both creative work and creative industries - does not provide their definition. Furthermore, the adopted by the individual authors views on creative workers and ways in which they understand creative workers differ substantially. Therefore, the aim of this article is the synthesis and critical analysis of prior literature in the field of understanding and definition of creative workers. Moreover, this paper aims at providing proposition of conceptualization of creative workers and identification of their role for development of modern organizations. The results of critical review and synthesis of prior literature indicate that there is a lack of conceptual coherence among authors with regard to the meaning and understanding of creative workers. A quite high level of conceptual heterogeneity refer to: creativity definition, imposition of requirement for creative work, consideration of creative workers inside creative industries only. Furthermore, an additional factor that hinders a clear and consistent understanding of creative workers, it is a kind of a terminological chaos resulting from the fact that many authors perceive creative workers synonymously with artistic workers, cultural workers, knowledge workers, or knowledge-intensive workers. Based on prior research conducted in the field of psychology, sociology, economic geography, and even in the area of human resource management this article provides the proposition of creative workers conceptualization, identifies the most important features assigned to this particular category of human resources, and indicates characteristic attributes of creative work realized by them. In addition, the discussion on the strategic importance of creative workers for the development of modern enterprises has been included at the end of the paper. The strategic character of creative workers and their ability to create long-term competitiveness have been identified through analysis of Barney's VRIS features describing the strategic resources as simultaneously valuable, rare, inimitable and nonsubstitutable. Furthermore, we suggest that creative workers - as they are extremely embedded in dense social networks - give organization opportunity to benefit from additional type of economic rent, namely relational rent.
