In recent years, the world was faced with a deep and long-lasting recession, resulting among others in an urgent need for altering previous forms of consumption. One of the most promising options is offered by a collaborative consumption idea, which is an economic model based on sharing, exchange, reselling, borrowing and renting goods and services, enabling access over ownership. In Western countries this concept is becoming more and more popular and influential. It is perceived not only as a solution for present economic difficulties faced by many households, but also as an answer to the global problem of overconsumption and - from this perspective - the way to prevent future crises through more sustainable development. The question being a starting point for the discussion is whether this idea may have similar potential in Eastern countries, e.g. in Poland, where consumers are still "recovering" after years of market shortages, trying to catch up and reach the consumption level characteristic for the West. Is there a chance that Polish society may avoid the problem of overconsumption and reduce the possibility of a future crisis by an early adoption of the solutions offered by the collaborative consumption concept?
