In strategic management field there is an on-going debate on the importance of industry versus resource-based conditions for a firm performance. The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of both types of conditions on the performance of the Polish small and medium-sized enterprises. Among the resource-based conditions we investigate the influence of entrepreneurial orientation, optimism and formalization. Industry conditions include the industry life cycle (young and fragmented, growing, mature), industry type (manufacturing, trade, professional services), and the character of competition (domestic vs. foreign). We also control for the firm's age, size and location. The hypotheses are tested with a hierarchical linear regression models on a sample of 543 Polish firms. Our results reveal that resource-based conditions are a stronger predictor of a firm performance than industry characteristics. Among the examined variables, entrepreneurial orientation has the greatest explanatory power. (original abstract)
