Value of a company is business imperative. Intangible assets including relationships with business environment entities have an important input in building the value of the company. The relationships of the company with suppliers and buyers are particularly important because it is between them that a direct exchange of finished products/services/materials/goods takes place, which explicitly affects the financial results of the company. Suppliers and buyers have the right to file against the company claims resulting from the terms and conditions of the transaction defined between the parties. Therefore, their interest in the procedural and/or factual aspects of the company is justified. This way through the implementation of the exchange process they affect the company, but also remain under its influence. Thus, suppliers and buyers are market stakeholders. The company operates within a network of interdependence with their market stakeholders. In this context it is important to have knowledge about the value of these relationships because it determines the relevance of choosing with whom to shape relationships as well as the type of these relationships and this decision itself ultimately affects the market value of the company. For this reason the creation of the value of relationships which will contribute to the improvement of the market value of the company requires its management. Managing the value of a company's relationship with its market stakeholders consists in a well-thought-out and coordinated shaping and monitoring of benefits derived by the enterprise from these relationships as well as costs incurred by the enterprise in pursuing these relationships in order to build a relationship portfolio with the optimal value. The problem of managing the value of a company's relationship with its market stakeholders has not been explained thoroughly in theory so far and has not been examined empirically on the basis of practice. This is why the monograph seeks to develop a model in which mechanisms of managing the value of a company's relationship with its market stakeholders are explained, which is followed by discussing the results of the research into managing the value of a company's relationship with its market stakeholders in companies operating in Poland. In addition, the dimension of the application the monograph puts forward a typology of the portfolio of relationships taking into account the criterion of their value, a typology of factors that create the relationship of companies with market stakeholders and the method of measuring the value of these relationships. Based on the analysis of the current research achievements it has been found out that the following elements make up the model of the system of managing the value of company's relationships with its market stakeholders: the intentionality of the behavior of the relationship's entities, characteristics of the relationships, shaping and monitoring the value of the company's relationships with market stakeholders that through the interaction with each other condition any information-and-decision-making as well as coordination actions aimed at building a portfolio of relationships with market stakeholders with an optimal value for the company, which ultimately translates into its market value. The intentionality of the behavior of the relationship's entities is determined by their expectations, bargaining power, the objectives of the operation and the drive for the desired creation and capturing of the relationship's value. The relationships between companies and their market stakeholders are also characterized by different characteristics depending on the logics of the value creation applied by the entities, the attitudes of entities to a relationship, the life cycle of the relationship and the achieved and the expected value of the relationship. The potential for value creation lies in its sources which can be considered in the following dimensions: economic, behavioral, product and organizational and their identification is necessary because they are the starting point for shaping the value of the company's relationship with market stakeholders. As a result of the implementation of activities including research and development, procurement, production, sales and promotion undertaken within the framework of processes of shaping the relationships, i.e. the acquisition, satisfaction, retention and severing of relationships, there are activated sources of the relationships' value, which makes the relationship's entities receive the benefits as well as incur the costs associated with the implementation of these relationships. The actually received benefits and costs incurred are becoming the only drivers of value that is received from the relationship and the value supplied in connection with its delivery. Monitoring the value of the company's relationship with its market stakeholders requires its measurement which provides the basis for conducting an informed relationship. The assessment is necessary to make right decisions concerning further development of relationships with market stakeholders. Empirical studies in turn have shown that in practice there are no universally accepted tools for measuring the value of the company's relationship with market stakeholders. This lack of knowledge about the relationship's value means that companies operating in Poland are not seeking to build a portfolio of relationships with optimal values for them. Thus, in organizational practice, managing the value of a company's relationship with its market stakeholders is not systemic in nature but actions only are taken in this area. The scope of activities undertaken by companies in the management of the value of relationships with suppliers and buyers is greater than in the case of relationships with consumers. This leads to the conclusion that the surveyed companies pay more attention to managing the value of inter-organizational relationships than to managing the value of relationships with consumers. In addition, the range of activities undertaken in the management of the value of the enterprise's relationships with market stakeholders is not determined by the type of environment in which businesses operate but depends on the overriding the objective of the enterprise and on the enterprise's perception of the significance of relationships with market stakeholders in building a competitive position. The scope of activities undertaken in managing the value of the company's relationships with suppliers is also determined by the type of their business, their size and their existence in the market. The latter factor also affects the range of activities undertaken in managing the value of the company's relationship with consumers. Thus, the scope of activities undertaken by companies in managing the value of the company's relationship with suppliers is determined by more factors than in the case of relationships with buyers and consumers. This leads to the conclusion that the surveyed companies pay more attention to managing the value of relationships with suppliers than to those with buyers and consumers, which in turn makes one conclude that companies may perceive costs as the main factor in creating value of the relationship. In addition, even though companies in practice do not measure the value of relationships with market stakeholders they do have the information needed for its measurement. The surveyed companies do not use this information because they do not apply the criterion of the value of relationships for building a portfolio of relationships. The reason is that in practice there is no universally accepted and applied method of measuring the value of the relationship. It should be noted that due to the lack of certainty as to the representativeness of the study sample the empirical study as described in the monograph does not provide the basis for generalizations and drawing conclusions about the general population, and the results only show the status and the interdependencies within the investigated companies. The monograph is the result of research literature and empirical studies conducted within the framework of the habilitation research project No. N115 410240 financed by the National Science Centre(original abstract)
