One of the effective ways to acquire new knowledge, skills and ability is to establish and carry out cooperation with other companies within the framework of strategic alliances. Therefore, the competitive advantage of the company is currently based, among other things, not only on its internal resources, but also it is shaped by the results of the cooperation carried with other companies, including competitors. Strategic alliances confer the possibility to acquire or jointly produce valuable knowledge, which is a source of a competitive advantage for the company, allies and the entire alliance. In this sense, the strategic importance for the survival and development of companies in todays business environment seems to be gaining knowledge and core competencies from other companies in the framework of strategic agreements. The article points out the two main areas of this process: the importance of knowledge value chain and knowledge transfer by building synergistic knowledge networks in the alliance. This process becomes a key driving force to acquire, create and share partners knowledge and can affect gaining, maintaining and/or strengthening the competitive advantages of each companies in the strategic alliance.
