Abstrakty

Kościół Jezusa Chrystusa Świętych w Dniach Ostatnich (kościół mormoński), odznaczający się oryginalnością doktryny religijnej i burzliwą historią społeczną budzi zainteresowanie badaczy także ze względu na rozliczne związki istniejące między ideami mormonizmu a ekonomią. Pisma mormońskie zawierają opisy rzeczywistych (lub w każdym razie za takie podawanych) wydarzeń z dziejów domniemanych starożytnych przodków dzisiejszych mormonów i ich nowożytnej wspólnoty, w źródłach doktrynalnych wyznania formułowane są zalecenia i wskazania dotyczące kształtu gospodarki, jaką powinni prowadzić jej członkowie, a rzeczywistą ich działalność - podobnie jak aktywność gospodarczą kościoła jako całości - można (i warto) zestawiać z promowanymi przez tę konfesję ideałami. Wszystkim tym trzem płaszczyznom rozważań poświęcono w artykule stosownie dużo miejsca, wyjaśniając zarazem, czemu - mimo swojej pomyślnej działalności, na pozór wpisującej się w główny nurt amerykańskiego życia społeczno- gospodarczego - kościół ten budzi nadal pewną niechęć i obawy w USA. Zwrócono uwagę na potrzeby dalszych badań nad tym wyznaniem, które z pewnością, zważywszy jego rozwój i ambicje (nie tylko w zakresie prozelityzmu), będzie wielokrotnie jeszcze dawać znać o sobie. The Church of Latter-day Saints (Mormon Church), with its unique religious doctrine and stormy social history, stirs up scholarly interest also due to the numerous ties linking the ideas of Mormonism with economics. Mormon scriptures provide us with a description of economic history of both the alleged ancient American tribes descending from the Old World ancestors and modern Mormon community. Sources of the Mormon doctrine instruct the believers what the shape of the economic activities of the Latter-day Saints should be like, and the way in which the actual business of individual Church members and the Church as a whole is conducted is well-worth learning and comparing with the Mormon ideals. Due amount of consideration has been given in the article to all the three above mentioned spheres and the reasons why the LDS Church keeps arousing doubts and fears in the American society despite its apparent closeness to the mainstream American socio-economic life, have been tackled, too. Further research should be done on the most interesting religious denomination, though, as - given its ambitions, not restricted to mere proselytism - the Mormon Church is bound to make itself heard of on many occasions in the future.
