The main aim of the monograph is to theoretically and empirically identify the impact of strategic leadership complexity on organizational strategic adaptation to environment from the perspective of the micro-foundations concept. The theoretical aims are as follows: (1) To order the content of the micro- foundation concept in epistemological-methodological terms; (2) To integrate management achievements in the scope of evolving the concepts concerning the causality of organizational (collective) phenomena perceived at the individual level; (3) To work out theoretical-methodological basics of the micro-foundations concept in strategic management by means of systemizing the following streams: behavioural theory of the firm, behavioural economics, upper echelon theory, and strategic leadership complexity - in terms of micro-foundations category, analysis level, and research methodology; (4) To develop a conceptual model of strategic leadership complexity; (5) To explain the relationships amongst the constituents of strategic leadership complexity model (i.e. the behavioural, cognitive, and social dimensions of strategic leadership complexity), the hallmarks of strategic leadership (i.e. adaptive capability, absorptive capacity, and social capability), and organizational strategic adaptation to environment. The methodological aims are: (1) To recognize premises and characteristics of the micro-foundational analysis per se as well as the micro-foundational analysis of the impact of strategic leadership complexity on organizational strategic adaptation to environment; (2) To recognize the methodological-empirical approach that is appropriate to the micro-foundational analysis per se as well as the micro-foundational analysis of the impact of strategic leadership complexity on organizational strategic adaptation to environment; (3) To implement and evaluate the quantitative methodological approach and cross level structural equation modelling (with moderated mediation) in examining the impact of strategic leadership complexity on organizational strategic adaptation to environment. In turn the empirical aims are as follows: (1) To identify the state of behavioural, cognitive, and social strategic leader complexity as well as strategic leader's adaptive capability, absorptive capacity, and social capability in enterprises in Poland; (2) To identify the state of organizational strategic adaptation to environment in enterprises in Poland; (3) To identify the mutual relationships amongst the dimensions of strategic leadership complexity, the hallmarks of strategic leadership, and organizational strategic adaptation to environment; (4) To recognize explanatory power of strategic leadership complexity in achieving organizational strategic adaptation to environment by means of testing analytical paths for exogenous variables in cross level moderated mediation. The theoretical, methodological, and empirical aims have been completed with the practical ones concerning implications enabling top managers to support achieving organizational strategic adaptation to environment. The first chapter imposes the epistemological-ontological perspective of the whole monograph. It concerns the micro-foundations concept in strategic management. Specifically, the conceptualizations of the concept have been integrated as well as the research domains in that field have been identified and described. Next, the basic micro-foundational elements have been distinguished and consequently they have been integrated into wider categories. The chapter focuses also on the following methodological issues due to micro-foundational analysis: reductionism, aggregation, emergence mechanisms, methodological individualism, and structural aspects of micro-foundational explanation in the form of the Coleman's diagram as well as the aspects of multilevel research. The second chapter presents the concept of strategic leadership complexity as the latest identified nexus in the evolution of causality logic in explaining the organizational phenomena. It has been posed that the strategic leadership complexity concept and its epistemological-methodological basics constitute theoretical foundations of the micro-foundations concept in strategic management. Hence, behavioural theory of the firm, behavioural economics, upper echelon theory, and strategic leadership complexity have been described in terms of analysis level criterion. Moreover, theoretical constructs of the conceptual model of strategic leadership complexity have been presented and explained, namely the hallmarks of strategic leadership, the dimensions of strategic leadership complexity, and organizational strategic adaptation to environment. The considerations made in the chapter have been summarized from the perspective of micro-foundational categories, the directions of analysis levels, and research methodology what highlights the methodological context of examining strategic leadership complexity model and the specificity of micro-foundational analysis. The third chapter is oriented towards the design of own empirical research. The methodological assumptions as well as premises and characteristics of multilevel research conducted have been emphasized. Moreover, the chapter is focused on the research model and hypotheses representing the relationships amongst the model constituents. Those relationships have been presented in the form of both specific associations and the cross level moderated mediation model. The research model has been also confronted with the premises and characteristics of the micro-foundational analysis. Additionally, research methods, measurement tools, sample selection and its characteristic, and measurement rigidity testing have been described as well. The fourth chapter presents the research results and their interpretation. Specifically, it describes the state of strategic leadership complexity and the state of organizational strategic adaptation to environment. As well as this, the empirical analysis of strategic leadership complexity as the micro-foundation of organizational strategic adaptation to environment has been illustrated as well. The conclusion section summarizes all theoretical, methodological, and empirical findings. Moreover, the research contribution towards management achievements, practical implications for top managers as well as research limitations and directions have been presented. The monograph content has been inspired with the own research project no. 2012/05/D/HS4/01317 titled "The model of cohesiveness between managerial attitudes, goals and organizational strategies. Behavioural strategies" realized in years 2012-2017, and financed by the National Scientific Centre. The monograph realizes the research directions formulated in that research project.(original abstract)
