The importance of building social capital and trust in society is very often emphasized again ana again in modern economies. Attention is also drawn to those factors that will unify the nation on the one hand, and on the other, will add added value to the economy and stimulate long-term growth in real GDP. The article attempts to verify the hypothesis that education, especially at a higher level, is conducive to building trust amongst people, both in the immediate environment and in further environments. For this purpose, students studying economics at the University of Szczecin have been surveyed both at the beginning of the university education and at the end. The results of the research indicated that the level of generalized trust decreased, with only limited trust of the students to strangers, with a small percentage of them trusting public institutions, although trust in this area grew in the studied period, and with increasing trust to the immediate surroundings and communities which they knew(original abstract)
