The present paper shows the results of the researches concerning structural changes in the domain of industry of the towns in the Płock voivodeship in the early period of transformation of the political system. The investigation comprises three main issues:transformation of property of industrial plants,changes in quantity structure,trends of changes of structure of industrial functions of towns. From the analyse it appears that: Increasing proportional participation of employees in private sector occured in all towns. However, pace of privatization processes is different; the biggest changes concern the small towns (Krośniewice, Gąbin, Wyszogród) - almost 100% industrial plants represent private sector, whereas in the largest towns of region (Płock, Kutno, Gostynin) public sector comprises majority of employees. Growth of importance of small and medium plants beside diminition of number of large ones. These tendencies are affected by creation of the new small factories, reduction of employment and liquidation of some large plants as well. The transformation of the political system brought about following changes in structure of industrial functions: an absolute drop of exogenous employment in all towns except Płock i Sierpc;the proportion of the exogenous sector in relation to the general employment diminished in the majority towns;in some towns diversification of industrial functions has been recorded, in other ones homogenization of functional structure;the majority of towns kept the same dominant function (except Gąbin, Łęczyca and Wyszogród);generally, one can distinguish the dynamic functions which are characterised by both absolute and relative increase of exogenous employment (the food, clothing, timber and furniture industries) and static or regressive ones characterised by a stagnation or a slight drop of employment (the building trade, the textile, chemical, electrotechnical, electronic and precision instruments industries). The conclusion is that the property and quantity structure and the economic base of industry in the towns has changed. After 45 years of the communist system, it conforms itself to the rules of the market economy. (original abstract)
