The aim of the study is to assess shale gas extraction and its impact on US energy security in 2007-2015. The analysis covers the years 2007-2015, the phenomenon where possible is shown in a wider time horizon: 1970-2040, while by 2016 it has a historical character, and from 2017 - a prognostic one. The source of data was the American Energy Information Administration and databases of recognized international organizations (World Bank) or industry (BP). In the course of the research, a literature review related to energy security was used. In the empirical part, statistics based on secondary data were quoted. The US energy security assessment shows that the US energy security in the period 2007-2015 has significantly improved. A similar trend can be seen in the years 1970-2040, with the exception of periods of oil crises in the 1970s and 1980s, and a sharp rise in oil prices in the first decade of the new century. Year 2016 is also one of the points of the time series for the USA, in which one of the lowest levels of the index was recorded, which means one of the highest energy security assessments in this country. Undoubtedly one of the factors that significantly contributed to this fact is shale gas extraction in the USA. The production of this unconventional hydrocarbon, apart from increasing the supply on the domestic market, also has an important dimension on a global scale. (original abstract)
